The Story Behind This eBook

If you've read my blog at yorkieness.com, you will know that I adore yorkies. Recently I received my second Yorkie named Minnie, my son brought it home one day out of the blue with my hubby. Now our family gotten bigger and I am the proud mommy of my 4 year old yorkie named Pinky, and 8 week old baby girl Minnie!

When we got our yorkie four years ago, we had no idea what to expect. We didn't know yorkies are fussy eaters, or that they can grow into your heart so much, you consider them your children. Well, fast forward to today - and I am very happy that I've gotten a yorkie many years ago.

Pinky was a fussy eater, we always had problems with her diet. It meant going to the vet clinic quite often, we became regulars and the Doctor always asked, so why are you here now Pinky. Endless therapy after therapy was exhausting, interrupted our routine, and cost a whole lot. It wasn't until I started researching and learning that other yorkie owners too have diet problems that I decided, maybe I should cook for my yorkie.

You see, store bought food - no matter how premium they say it is - is always second best to home cooked food. Dog food makers do it for profit, not for the love of dogs. So they will always include and utilize ingredients that may or may not be healthy for your doggie. That is why I started gathering recipes around 3.5 years ago, and been cooking for Pinky ever since.

I've put this eBook together and decided to share it with all of you because it really helped me a lot; my baby is healthier than ever, I don't have to visit the vet so often saving us a whole lot of money on vet bills, and best of all our life is most enjoyable.

Hope you like the book!! And be sure to get in touch if you have any recipes to share!

Sending you many yorkie hugs, xoxo

Dora

RECIPES

SPOT'S CHICKEN STEW

21/2 pounds whole chicken or turkey (bones, organs, skin and all) 1/4 cup chopped fresh garlic

1 cup green peas

1 cup coarsely chopped carrots

1/2 cup coarsely chopped sweet potato 1/2 cup coarsely chopped zucchini

1/2 cup coarsely chopped yellow squash 1/2 cup coarsely chopped green beans 1/2 cup coarsely chopped celery

1 tablespoon kelp powder

1 tablespoon chopped rosemary

11 to 16 cups spring water

For dogs only: Add 8 ounces whole barley and 6 ounces rolled oats, and adjust the water content to 16 cups spring water or enough to cover the ingredients. (The grains are not recommended for cats.)

Yield: 20 cups.

Combine all ingredients in a 10-quart stainless-steel stockpot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat as low as possible and simmer for 2 hours; carrots should be very soft. Remove from heat, let cool, and debone the chicken.

With an electric hand mixer or a food processor, blend the ingredients into a puree. The stew should be slightly thicker for dogs and more soupy for cats.

Using plastic baggies or yogurt containers, divide into meal-sized portions. Refrigerate three days' worth and freeze the rest.

LEO'S COOKIES (an original recipe from PilarPassmore)

1/2 brick regular or low-fat cream cheese

2 cups whole-wheat flour

6 ounces carrot baby food

3 ounces olive oil

Splash of vanilla

Mix the ingredients; mash, knead and flatten. If you don't have a bone-shaped cookie cutter, use the baby food jar to make round cookies.

Place cookies on a baking sheet, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Turn off the oven, and leave the cookies inside until the oven cools.

Yield: about 21/2 dozen cookies.

A batch generally keeps for about two weeks.

Passmore's warning: "Once they eat these cookies, they won't eat the others."

Doggie Tuna-Mac!

1 C. Whole Wheat pasta (uncooked, organic if possible) 1/4 C. Grated Carrots or Peas

1 T. Butter

1/2 T. all-purpose flour 1 can tuna

1/2 C. shredded cheddar cheese 3/4 C. skim milk

1 tsp Healthy Powder (I just added this to the recipe) 500 iu Vitamin E

Cook pasta according to package directions. (If you use anything larger than small shells, chop it up into smaller pieces so it's easier for them to eat.)

Melt butter in small saucepan. Add milk and flour, and cook over medium-low heat until sauce is thickened and bubbly. Stir in cheddar cheese until all is melted together. Remove from heat or it will stick to the bottom of the pan.

Drain tuna, put in medium bowl. Add veggies and pasta. Stir in supplements until well distributed. Pour cheese sauce over entire mixture and toss. You can top with a little extra cheese or veggies, if you like.

Peanut Butter Pupsicles

1 ripe banana

1/2 cup peanut butter 1/4 cup oatmeal

Mash bananas and peanut butter, stir in oatmeal. Chill 1 hour. Make into appropriate sized snacks for your pup. Place in container, store in refrigerator (about 3 days) or freezer (probably 7, but they never last that long around here...).

Note: The original recipe called for wheat germ, but we use oatmeal. We also use natural/no-sugar-added peanut butter. We use a dogbone shaped cookie cutter to shape the pupsicles!

Dog Peanut Butter Cake

1 Cup Flour

1 Tsp. Baking Soda

1/4 Cup Peanut Butter

1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil

1 Egg

1/3 Cup Honey

1 Cup Shredded Carrots

Mix the flour and baking soda together. Add remaining ingredients. Blend well. Pour into 8" round or square baking pan coated with PAM. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Cool completely. Frosting can be made with 1 cup Cottage Cheese and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter pureed in blender or food processor. Frost when cool. If you don't have a cake decorating kit, you can take some peanut butter in a ziploc bag, push it to the corner, seal it and cut the very tip of the corner off. Then you can write your baby's name on the cake. Here's a picture of mine. (I used the ziploc bag, and it was real easy).

The Most Versatile Dog Treats

2 c. Brown Rice Flour (the original recipe called for wheat flour, but I prefer rice flour).

2 4oz jars of puree baby food in any flavor you like (just make sure there's no onion or onion powder in it!)

NOTES:

Water may be necessary to get this dough to the right consistency.

In addition to the baby food, you can add shredded carrots, parsley, peanut butter...virtually anything to enhance the taste.

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350°F.Mix ingredients to form a stiff dough. If necessary, add extra flour or water as needed. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to about a 1/4 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut into desired shape or a pizza cutter to make cubes.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place treats about 1/2 inch apart. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes. Allow to cool completely before storing in a paper bag (storing in an air-tight container will make them soft, but they're still edible).

HOME COOKED MEALS

Approx. 5 lbs. of ground lean beef or lean chicken 3/4 cup canola oil

4-5 cloves garlic

32 cups water

8-10 cups processed veggies (various)

(carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, spinach, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.)

NO ONIONS (not good for dogs) 2-3 cans kidney beans

1/2 molasses (optional)

42-45 oz. oatmeal (quick cooking oats) Eggs can be added to boost protein

In a large 24qt pot brown ground meat, add canola oil and garlic. When well cooked, add water. Bring to boil, then add veggies that have been processed, (frozen or canned veggies will work too). I use dried kidney beans and soak them the night before preparing a batch of food. While I am cooking the meat I have the beans in another pot cooking them. Once cooked, they are added to the above mixture. Next, the oatmeal is added. Frequent stirring is necessary at this point as the mixture will stick. Remove from heat, cool and put into containers. The above mixture feeds 7 Yorkies for 1 week. I occasionally add pumpernickel bread and sometimes substitute brown rice for some of the oatmeal. This recipe is very flexible. I also add a mixture called Healthy powder to each meal. I feed twice daily and add 1 tsp. of healthy powder to each meal for each dog.

PUMPKIN DOG BISCUITS

2 eggs

1/2 cup canned pumpkin 2 tablespoons dry milk 1/4 teaspoon sea salt

2 1/2 cups brown rice flour *

1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional) Preheat oven to 350.

In large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin to smooth. Stir in dry milk, sea salt, and dried parsley (if using, optional). Add brown rice flour gradually, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (can use the brown rice flour) and if dough is still rough, briefly knead and press to combine.

Roll dough between 1/4 to 1/2 inch, depending on your dogs chew preferences, use a biscuit or other shape cutter to punch shapes, gathering and re-rolling scraps as you go. Place shapes on cookie sheet, no greasing or paper necessary. If desired, press fork pattern on biscuits before baking, a quick up-and-down movement with fork, lightly pressing down halfway through dough. Bake 20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully turn biscuits over, then bake additional 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely on rack before feeding to dog.

* Brown rice flour gives the biscuits crunch and promotes better dog digestion. Many dogs have touchy stomachs or allergies, and do not, like many people I know, tolerate wheat.

Makes up to 75 small 1 inch biscuits or 50 medium biscuits.
